The Holiday Help The Homeless & Hungry Drive
I would like to give thanks to those that donated food, clothing
and toys at the December DRYL Meeting at Farragut SA in our effort to help the
hungry and homeless over the Holidays. For
being something that was so short notice it turned out very well. I can only hope that we continue this as an annual
thing as there is no better feeling than giving during the holidays and
bringing smiles to those less fortunate.
As I mentioned in an email – the food we collected went to
Philabundance which disburses food to the homeless and homeless shelters in Philadelphia
and South Jersey. I spent some time
there helping out a couple hours and the only bad part of my time there was the
fact that I could not play with the power fork lift – I was delegated to the
manual hand fork lift – however, before I left I did a get a chance to sit on the
big boy and pretend …. LOL
As for the
toys, clothing and any cash that was donated – that went to The Holy Trinity
Presbyterian Church in Kensington ( Frankford & Somerset ). The 3rd Saturday of each month the
church serves hot food to the areas homeless and less fortunate. The December offering is when Santa comes to
the church and gives a little something to the children after the food is given
out. We were able to give the Church about
60 toys and a couple dozen coloring books and crayons to give to the children. Mary & I went down to the church that Saturday
( 18th ) to help out in any way needed and had the company of NHYC
Members Ed & Maureen Strange. Ed
& I served food and Mary & Maureen greeted the arrivals. We were approached by many who expressed
their thanks and gave their blessings to us for our generosity. The smiles and expressions on the faces of
the kids and the adults was a warming feeling.
When Santa arrived and the gifts were given out the kids faces lit up
the poorly lit room of this church that was built in the 1800s. Those few hours there was time well spent and
our efforts and donations really did seem to make a difference as you could see
the excitement in the faces as the children waited in line to see Santa and get
a gift. When we were leaving the church
we came upon 2 little girls out front who were looking up on the roof – Mary mentioned
to them that they should go inside out of the cold when one of them replied
that they were just looking for Santa’s Sleigh and his Reindeers. I told them that it must be on the other side
of the church where the chimney is J

The thing about Christmas is that it asks a little more of us. It
asks us to Smile more. To Laugh more. To Forgive more. To Give more.
Here’s to Christmas! To the big and small of it and the way it coaxes us
to be the best people we can be.
Merry Christmas. Candyce
May 2011 be

and more importantly, may it bring lasting smiles and memories.
